Chesapeake Regional understands the challenges breast cancer patients face. For that reason, we employ all the latest treatment options and techniques available while providing the support every cancer patient needs.
Radiation therapy The Sidney M. Oman Cancer Center at Chesapeake Regional uses both external beam radiation therapy and high dose rate internal radiation therapy to precisely target a tumor. Both methods result in higher cure rates and fewer side effects. Both surgeon and radiation oncologist will determine the best approach for each patient.
Partial Breast Radiation/Brachytherapy A balloon attached to a thin tube is placed into the biopsy site or surgical site and filled with salt water. A small radioactive seed is put in the balloon for 10–15 minutes two times a day for five days. The balloon is then deflated and removed, drastically reducing the length of a patient’s radiation therapy.
Chemotherapy The use of anti-cancer drugs to treat cancerous cells. Chesapeake Regional has a spacious suite that offers patients comfort, privacy and therapeutic surroundings where they can watch television or listen to music during treatment.
Lymphedema therapy Chesapeake Regional offers the largest number of Vodder certified lymphedema specialists in Hampton Roads. Lymphedema therapy is a specially developed massage procedure that removes excess fluid and protein accumulation in the body tissues of breast cancer patients. Incorporating this massage technique along with compression and decongestive exercises will allow these patients to return to activities they enjoy more readily.
Hormonal therapy Chesapeake Regional offers hormonal therapy to prevent the growth, spread, and recurrence of breast cancer.
