Sick woman

If you are experiencing the following symptoms, come to the Emergency Department :

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Purple or blue discoloration of the lips
  • Signs of dehydration such as dizziness when standing, absence of urination or (in infants) a lack or tears when crying
  • Seizures or uncontrolled convulsions

OR you are in the following high-risk groups:

  • Aged 65 or older
  • Younger than 5
  • Pregnant
  • Have such underlying health conditions as HIV or asthma

Only high-risk patients will receive treatment. If you are not experiencing these symptoms or in a high-risk
group, stay home, rest and drink plenty of liquids. Call your primary care provider with any questions.

"We encourage everyone to take precautions," said Dr. Rick Manolio, an emergency physician at Chesapeake General Hospital. "Wash your hands frequently and try not to have contact with those who are ill."

However, if you do get that achy feeling, "stay home" urged Manolio, "unless you are experiencing severe symptoms. Rest and get plenty of fluids."

Manolio advises that patients call their primary care physicians before coming to the emergency room. The state also has a toll-free flu hotline available at 1-877-ASK-VDH3.
