Expert Panel to Discuss Weight Management and Menopause at Free Women's Seminar

September 19. 2014

CHESAPEAKE – An expert panel featuring a board-certified general and bariatric surgeon, a registered dietitian and a fitness specialist will offer information, tips and tricks at the next Red Hot Mamas seminar scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 6-8 p.m. at the Lifestyle Center.

Glen Moore, M.D., a general and bariatric surgeon who practices with Chesapeake Surgical Specialists, will define obesity and discuss the dangers associated with this condition as it affects not only people’s health, but their lifestyle and longevity as well. Women in pre-menopause and menopause still have the advantage of addressing their weight problems. Moore will also discuss other conditions often caused by obesity such as sleep apnea, hypertension, diabetes and more.

“At this age, you still have so much life ahead of you,” said Moore. “It’s not about the years and actions behind you, it’s about how you move forward, and if you take care of yourself and manage your weight, you’ll have more years to enjoy.”

Lauren Maguire, a registered dietitian, will also speak about how to manage your weight from a nutrition perspective. She will discuss specific diet information for menopausal women, such as consuming foods that may reduce hot flashes, replenishing the calcium supply, reading food labels and practicing portion control.

“On average women may gain between 10 and 15 pounds during their menopausal years. This may be because of the combination of their hormones changing and their metabolism slowing down,” said Maguire. “Because of this, they should pay attention to their calorie intake and commit to eating healthy, nutritional foods.”

Fitness trainer Erin Kennedy will also discuss the benefits and importance of exercising during menopause.

Chesapeake Regional has partnered with the Red Hot Mamas® to offer monthly menopause education programs aimed at providing medical information and peer support to women, men and family members dealing with the physical and psychological impacts of menopause.

The free seminars, which cover topics throughout the year that deal with the full body, are held monthly at the Lifestyle Center, located at 800 Battlefield Boulevard, North, in Chesapeake.

All women and their partners are invited to attend the seminars. To RSVP, call 757-312-5144.
