Show features art that heals
WEDNESDAY
JUNE 11 THROUGH MONDAY JUNE 30
Artists who have used painting, photography and sculpture
to help them heal from illness will display their works in the
lobby at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center June 11-30.
The Healing Arts show, which is sponsored by the medical
center and the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission, will open
with a reception and artist meet-and-greet at 5 p.m., Wednesday,
June 11. The reception is free and open to the public.

Partnership gives students hands-on
healthcare experience
Chesapeake Regional is partnering with Norfolk State University to help interest
area middle and high school students in pursuing health and science
careers.
At NSU’s Health and Science Academy, held June 30-July 11 on the university’s
campus, students will get a chance to gain hands-on experience in health
and science careers, including ones in the medical field. Chesapeake Regional
staff members will be working with the students to help them gain insight into
working at a healthcare facility, and campers will visit the hospital July 7 and 10.
Teens, get fit to sit
MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY, JUNE 16-19 6:30-8:30 p.m.
MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY, JUNE 23-26 10 a.m. until noon
Chesapeake Regional will sponsor two summer sessions of babysitting classes to help teens get ready to earn cash. The eight-hour course is designed for teens and pre-teens, ages 11-15. Course instruction includes the business side of babysitting, marketing, accident prevention, handling emergencies, age-appropriate toys and activities, diapering and feeding infants, toddler care and behavioral characteristics of young children. Cost is $40.

Spread the Ohm
The Lifestyle Center’s yoga classes begin the week of June 23.
MONDAYS, 6:45-8:15 p.m.
TUESDAYS, 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., or 4:15-5:30 p.m. WEDNESDAYS 6:45-8:15 p.m.
Each session will last for eight weeks and costs $80 for non-members.
Improve balance and lower blood pressure with Tai Chi
MONDAYS, 10:45–11:45 a.m.

The Lifestyle Center offers a range of ongoing sessions in Tai Chi, an ancient form of exercise that uses slow, mindful movements that help with physical and mental well-being. This class is for all levels. Non-members pay $60 for eight sessions, which don’t have to be taken consecutively.
Awards
Nurses receive annual awards
Two nurses at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center have received the organization’s highest clinical awards.
Hallice Waddell-Evans has been named the recipient of Chesapeake Regional’s annual Nurse Exemplar Award.
Ruth Cody, R.N., the organization’s bariatric coordinator, was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Nurse Leadership Exemplar. Read more
Environmental Stewardship award
Chesapeake Regional Medical Center was recognized as a leader in environmental stewardship by the Hampton Roads Sanitation District. The organization has been honored by HRSD for its perfect compliance for the last eight years.
Award for reducing patient risks
George Mason University’s Department of Health Administration and Policy has presented Chesapeake Regional with its Improvement of the Year award for the staff’s efforts in reducing risks with patient-controlled analgesia narcotics. “This medical center aimed to identify technology that would be cost efficient for an independent community hospital and implemented this new technology to save lives,” the university released in announcing the award.
Appointments
Sherwood Moore has been named service line administrator for Cardiovascular Services at Cheapeake Regional Medical Center. Moore has been with the medical center for 17 years, most recently serving as the interim service line administrator for Cardiovascular Services.
Ruth Cody, R.N., is Chesapeake Regional’s new Bariatric Program coordinator. Cody previously served as the nurse manager for the center’s GeroPsychiatric Program on 3 West. In the more than 26 years she has worked at Chesapeake Regional, Cody has held numerous supervisory positions.
Richard Dooling is the organization’s new web content manager. As such, he oversees web strategy and the site, www.chesapeakeregional.com. Most recently, Dooling served as project manager and quality assurance lead for web-based military courseware at General Dynamics in Norfolk. He has 14 years of web site and graphic design experience.
Assisted-living facility has openings
Vacancies are currently available at the assisted-living facility, located on Cedar Road in Great Bridge. Cedar Manor has private furnished suites with bathrooms and on-site licensed nurse and nursing assistants available 24 hours a day.
