Because women have unique health needs from childbirth to osteoporosis Chesapeake Regional Medical Center provides various classes and programs at the Lifestyle Center on the campus of Chesapeake General Hospital. The goals are all the same - to keep women healthy through all phases of their lives.
Osteoporosis Testing
Women who are post-menopausal, thin Caucasians or Asian, have a strong family history of osteoporosis or take medications that cause bone loss are at high risk of developing this debilitating disease. One in two women and one in eight men will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.
To help determine your risk of osteoporosis, the staff at the Lifestyle Center offers heel bone density screenings for $25. Call 312.6132 for more information.
The full-body bone density test or DEXA scan is a therapeutic, painless 20-minute X-ray procedure performed at the Jennings Outpatient Center. A Physicican's referral is needed for this test. Call 312.6137 to schedule an appointment.

Preparing for childbirth classes
Baby and Dog
This class will help you assess your dog's disposition and inclinations, and discuss practices to implement before baby arrives. It also will cover how to introduce baby to dog, and explore dog's changing life and attitude. The class is not only geared for baby's immediate family but is also for caregivers, family members and friends who have dogs and will care for baby. Thursday, Feb. 21 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Cost is $20. Included in the $90 childbirth education package.
Boot Camp For New Dads
Are you ready to be a dad? This program is for first time fathers will tell you about newborn behaviors, practical strategies for living with a baby, what kind of support mom needs, parenting as a team and much more. "Veteran" dads will bring their own babies to practice with. For an updated schedule, call 757.312.6508. Cost: $20. Included in the $90 Childbirth Education Package.
Breastfeeding Basics
Whether new moms plan to breastfeed or are still unsure, this informative class can answer a wealth of questions to get them off to a good start. Dads and grandparents are encouraged to attend! Please bring a life-sized baby doll for practice. Classes are held the first Thursday of each month from 6:30-9 p.m. Call 757.312.6508 to register. How To Parent Your Newborn
This two-part series gives the latest information on baby care and raising a happy, well-adjusted child.
Part I: The "how-to's" on umbilical cord care, feeding, bathing, diapering, temperature taking and much more. A life-sized doll or stuffed toy should be brought to this class for practice.
Part II: Since the love and nurturing you give now is the foundation for your child's happiness and self-assuredness in later years, our Certified Parent Educator will share the latest research on a variety of topics, including: infant attachment, temperament, personality and bonding.
Classes are held the first and second Monday of each month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Call 757.312.6508 to register. Cost: $35 per couple. (Included in childbirth package).
Infant/Child Heartsaver
This course teaches basic airway skills, CPR and saftey on infants and children age 8 and older. A two-year certification is issued upon successful demonstration of skills. All classes are held on selected Tuesdays, 6-9 p.m. Call 312.6132 for an updated schedule. Cost of $55 includes manual.
Lactation Consultation
Help is an appointment away. Trouble latching, soreness, insufficient supply, returning to work/school, teething or weaning problems? These all may be solved more quickly and easily by one of our board-certified lactation consultants. Individual consultation are by appointment only. For appointments, call 757.312.3159. Cost is $55 for the first hour and $25 per half-hour thereafter.
Maternity & Sibling Tours
You're going to spend some of the most important days of your life in our BirthPlace at Chesapeake General Hospital. You may want to look around ahead of time and get comfortable with the surroundings. And since we've remodeled, comfort is definitely an accurate description. Take our virtual tour or come in for our 45-minute tour and get a preview of all the facilities you'll be using when the big day arrives. A separate tour just for siblings helps kids feel comfortable with the upcoming delivery. Sibling tours for children ages 3 to 10 years old are held on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Cost: Free Call 757.312.6508 to register.
