Sidney M. Oman Cancer Treatment Center

Since the opening of the Sidney M. Oman Cancer Treatment Center at Chesapeake General Hospital in 1995, the facility has specialized in providing the full range of care needed by cancer patients.

For patients like Willie Brown, a local resident who made 36 trips to the center for radiation therapy to treat his throat cancer, the center became almost like home. As always, Barbara, his wife of 22 years, was at his side.

"I'd sit and have coffee. I even made new friends," Barbara noted. "He got more than his voice back, he got just what he needed at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. He got hope."

In recent years, as Chesapeake's population has grown, so has the need for the center's services.

To help the center continue offering the latest in treatment services, in 2003 the Chesapeake Regional Health Foundation kicked off a $2 million fund-raising campaign to renovate the center, expand its offerings and provide patients with the personalized care Chesapeake General has become known for. In June 2005, the newly expanded center opened with more space, more services and the latest in cancer-fighting equipment.
