Surgeons use image-guided technology for sinus and brain procedures

Surgeons at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center are using new image guided technology to give them a clearer view of the brain and sinus cavities during delicate operations. With the Kolibri BrainLAB system, physicians can visualize and track the position of a surgical probe and the surrounding anatomy by looking at highresolution three-dimensional images on a nearby computer workstation. As a result, they can complete minimally invasive Brain Labsurgeries more effectively and with greater safety. “This is a new and fast navigation tool,” said Dr. Nasrollah Fatehi, a neurosurgeon at the center. “The system can eliminate the need for a patient to receive a repeat MRI prior to surgery, thus shortening the process for them. It also allows the surgeon a much higher degree of accuracy because the view is so clear.”

The system also provides automatic calculations so the surgeon can accurately size and position the surgical site before and during the procedure. Having access to 3-D diagnostic images, instead of 2-D or “flat” images, allows the surgeon to navigate instruments on the computer monitor, and simulate and verify each surgical step before it is actually performed.
