The cardiovascular system is made up of the heart and blood vessels. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), as defined by the American Heart Association, include coronary heart disease (coronary artery disease, ischemic heart disease); stroke (brain attack); high blood pressure (hypertension); and rheumatic heart disease.

About 71 million US adults have one or more forms of CVD.

Each year in the US, cardiovascular diseases top the list of most serious health problems. Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death and stroke is the third leading cause of death. Stroke is also the number one cause of serious, long-term disability.

Yet, studies show that nearly everyone can become heart healthy by following a healthful diet and participating in an appropriate exercise program; eliminating tobacco products; and following a routine health care plan.

Most important to toppling cardiovascular diseases as the number one cause of disability and death, is early detection and early treatment.

Cardiac care at CGH

Since February 2007, Chesapeake Regional Medical Center has been the official regional sponsor for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign. As presenting sponsor in South Hampton Roads, Chesapeake Regional Medical Center works with AHA’s local chapter to build awareness of the national program and to offer women opportunities to take action to reduce their risk of heart disease. Chesapeake Regional Medical Center offers a complete exercise therapy and educational program for individuals who have been diagnosed with various forms of cardiovascular disease, such as angina, heart attack, or coronary artery disease and/or individuals recovering from bypass surgery, angioplasty/stents, or heart transplant.

Chesapeake General Hospital has recently added a second cardiac catheterization lab, a state-of-the-art facility equipped with Philips’ digital flat-plane cardiac–vascular X-ray system. The sophisticated system provides a distortion free, high-resolution, 3-Dl image of the heart’s coronary arteries, a key advance over the grainy images currently available in most hospitals’ technology.

In addition to the Philips cardiac–vascular X-ray system, CGH’s second cardiac cath lab has a state-of-the-art archival system that is not available at any other healthcare facility locally. With it, cardiologists will be able to compare such images as angiograms and echocardiograms side-by-side.

The lab offers expanded services to cardiologists, interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons and significantly increases the number of patients cared for at the lab.

A comprehensive program

Our cardiac rehabilitation program addresses the physical, emotional, nutritional and vocational needs of the individual. It includes a supervised, regular progression of activity designed to strengthen the cardiovascular system as well as increase muscular strength and flexibility. Other benefits of the exercise therapy include loss of body fat, lowered blood pressure, lowered blood cholesterol and increased tolerance to stress. The cardiovascular program seeks to assist you in attaining and maintaining physical fitness of your cardiovascular and muscular systems, while aiding you in your return to work and normal daily activities. We also help family members to understand your medical condition and any necessary lifestyle changes that you may need.

Phases of treatment

In order to reach these goals, our Cardiovascular Therapy Program is divided into three phases, each designed to promote optimal recovery.

Phase I. In-hospital education and low-level exercise program designed to introduce the risk factors associated with heart disease and begin rehabilitation from your cardiac event.

Phase II/III. A natural progression from the inpatient program. Phase II/III is a more in-depth and structured exercise/educational plan designed to help you control your disease. Enrollment in Phase II/III requires a physician's referral. Spouse and family members are encouraged to attend with you.

Components of Phase II/III include:

  • Individual exercise prescription and guidelines
  • Group exercise sessions with warm-up and cool-down periods
  • Aerobic circuit exercise, weight and flexibility training
  • Educational sessions on medications, risk factors, nutrition, smoking cessation, stress management and exercise safety
  • 6-12 week sessions, 3 days per week for 1 hour each; lecture once a week for an additional hour

Phase IV. A higher level cardiac fitness and maintenance exercise program for graduates of Phase II/III or those with cardiac risk factors. Participants are encouraged to continue in a safe, supervised exercise program specifically designed to promote the continuation of a heart-healthy way of life. Our Phase IV program meets at various times Monday-Friday, at both Lifestyle Centers with ongoing educational lectures and intermittent monitoring of vital signs during exercise.

Program costs

Costs for Phase II/III therapies vary according to the length of time spent in the programs. Most insurance companies will reimburse all or part of the rehabilitation services. The Phase IV maintenance fee is $40 per month.
