Volunteering

Come be part of our team

Volunteering at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center is rewarding and interesting. Our volunteers know they are making a difference every day and that their efforts are appreciated by our patients and staff. Volunteers are truly a part of our team and are treated as such. Volunteers wear a uniform and ID badge so that their official status is immediately recognized by Chesapeake Regional Medical Center staff and patients. Volunteers are included in hospital special events and are given a special reception during National Hospital Week each year.

In addition to a general orientation, volunteers receive training in their chosen area. Additional special training may be provided in certain areas of the hospital, such as our Mother/ Baby Unit or Hospital Elder Life Program (H.E.L.P.).

Benefits of volunteering

People volunteer in their communities for many reasons. Of course, you want to make a positive difference in the lives of the people you interact with, but volunteering benefits the volunteer too. Volunteering can help you learn about your community and your role in it. Volunteering can help you gain valuable experience in the field of healthcare.

Volunteering can help you:

  • Make new friends
  • Discover new interests
  • Realize new skills
  • Have new experiences
  • Build your resume
  • Enhance your transcript
  • Augment your education

Through volunteering at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, individuals have the opportunity to enhance the care of our patients, provide help to our clinical and non-clinical departments, supplement the care given by nurses and doctors, and help visitors and patient’s families.

We appreciate the time and talents of our volunteers!

Volunteer Opportunities

We have many opportunities for those interested in volunteering. Some volunteers come to us with very specific goals and ideas about what they want to do. Others come knowing they want to volunteer but aren’t sure what they want to do or how they can help. That’s why each applicant to our program is given an individual interview to ascertain their interests, skills and availability. We will help to make your volunteer experience rewarding.

Every effort is made to place new volunteers areas they find interesting.  With so many fields of service available, you are sure to find something that’s right for you!
Here are a few of the areas available:

Central Registration:
Volunteers greet patients as they arrive and help the registration staff with the admitting process. They also escort patients around the hospital.

Patient Information Desk:
In this fast-paced position volunteers field requests for information, transfer calls to patient rooms and various departments, greet visitors and help with directions, and assist patients with wheelchairs.

Hospital Elder Life Program (H.E.L.P.):
These volunteers receive special training and serve as a friendly “visitor” to our elderly patients. The visit includes mental stimulation and ambulation (walking) plus offering help with feeding if needed.

Phase II:
Phase II is a recovery room for same day surgery patients who will be going home a few hours after their surgery. Volunteers escort these patients via wheelchair to the front entrance of the hospital among other duties.

Other opportunities:

  • Gift shop
  • Lifestyle center
  • Nursing units
  • Public relations
  • Fund development
  • Home health and hospice
  • and much more!

Normal volunteer shifts:

  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1-5 pm and 5-9 pm.
  • flexible schedules for working adults

Our student volunteers (15-18) serve during the summer months and can work during the school year after completing one summer session.
