Helpful Strategies
Write down your food! If you can't do it every day, journal your food/calories, and exercise at least a few days every month to obtain the approximate number of calories you are eating. This way, you can begin to track if there is a pattern of increased calories. Begin the journal now and write all the reasons you are choosing this surgery (be specific!) in the beginning of the journal so you can look back and use this as motivation. Try not to be "all or nothing" with the journal. Even if you do it some days and not others, or part of the day and not all of it, you still gather information!
Set your e-mail/outlook/phone to remind you to take your vitamins, eat frequently or drink water. It takes approximately six weeks for something to become routine, so give yourself some help!
Prepare, prepare, prepare. If you know what you are going to eat in a given day, you are less likely to make poor choices. Some people find it helpful to take an hour or two on Sunday to plan a menu for the week and go shopping.
Work around your shortcomings. If you know that you are not a morning person, do not trick yourself into believing you will get up and fix a nutritious breakfast. Have protein drinks, bars or other convenient food available to you on your counter, in your car or in your drawer at work so that you won't skip this important meal! Likewise, with exercise plan if for a time that WORKS, not when you THINK you should be exercising!
Weigh yourself every week at the same time. Try to avoid weighing yourself daily, you are more likely to see accurate results in a seven day period than in a one day period. If you are still in your weight loss period and your weight stays the same for two weeks in a row, then journal your food to gain an accurate idea of how much you are eating. You may want to show your journal to a nutritionist or a bariatric professional to determine where your downfalls are.
