3-23-2004 | Chesapeake Health partners with Lions Club for Diabetes Family Camp
March 23, 2004 — The Chesapeake Health family has once again partnered with the Lions District 24D to sponsor the Lions Diabetes Family Camp at the Triple R Ranch, a 300-acre working ranch in Chesapeake.
An annual event since 1994, the weekend retreat April 23-25 is for children ages 4 through 18 with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and their families. The camp is designed to show youth with diabetes the fun they can have, and with others like themselves.
Activities include horse-back riding, canoeing, going on hayrides, attending diabetes seminars, meeting other families and sharing "diabetes" experiences. Accommodations are heated cabins on bunk beds.
Other activities include a confidence-building "Team Challenge" for teens, which involves a ropes and initiatives course. Under the guidance of diabetes nurse educators, younger children will learn how to give insulin injections. Parents will also benefit from an adults-only coffee support group, during which diabetes issues will be discussed.
The cost for the weekend is $135 each for the first two family members and $110 for each additional member. One adult from each family must attend per child. Parents, grandparents and siblings are welcome. The Lions of District 24D has a limited number of scholarships available. Those interested should register by Friday, April 4.
