Chesapeake Health raises awareness about diabetes at event

Oct. 25, 2004 — Approximately 18.2 million people in the United States have diabetes and nearly one-third are unaware that they even have it.

Don't be an uninformed statistic. Find out how to combat a disease that's attacking both old and young in record numbers during the upcoming Diabetes Awareness Night Thursday, Nov. 18, from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Lifestyle Center Chesapeake General.

Healthcare professionals will be on hand to talk about how a healthy lifestyle can delay diabetes onset or avoid contracting it at all. From 5:30-6:30 p.m., there will be free glucose screenings.

At 6:30 p.m., Dr. Christine Higgins will speak on Understanding Type 2 Diabetes. The most common of the two types of diabetes, Type 2 diabetes is caused when the body doesn't produce enough insulin or the cells ignore it. Type 2 diabetes is serious, but people who have it can go on to live long, healthy, happy lives with proper care, nutrition and exercise.

The night's events are free and open to the public. Call 757.312.6132 to register.
