Educators throw “showers” for CGH babies

March 15, 2006 — To ensure that Chesapeake General’s babies get a head start on life, two local education sororities throw them baby showers each year.

For the last decade, members of the Tidewater chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority have donated more than $6,200 of infant clothing, blankets and other merchandise to stock the Mother/Baby Unit’s clothes closet for discharged mothers in need.

“This is one project that really pulls us all together,” said chapter president, Diane Gibson, who is an elementary school principal in Norfolk. “It’s all about celebrating new life and helping these new mothers in need.”

Members of the Beta Theta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority have been holding a shower for more than 20 years. Each year, they donate gift bags of books, bibs and other supplies for new moms and their babies.

Carol Hilton, coordinator of CGH’s MomsMobile, said the groups are making a vital contribution.
“This is a wonderful thing they are doing,” she said. “We appreciate that they are helping us make sure that our babies go home with a little something extra to prepare them for the days ahead.”
