November 12, 2006 — Douglas V. Carson, immediate past chairman of the Chesapeake Hospital Authority, has been awarded the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association’s 2006 Excellence in Governance Award.

Carson Doug

Carson was cited for his service as a “stabilizing force, passionate advocate and dedicated visionary on behalf of Chesapeake Health.” Serving an unprecedented three-year term, Carson oversaw a national search to select a new administrator following the retirement of longtime president and chief executive officer, Donald S. Buckley. Under his stewardship, the organization enhanced financial performance, increased patient satisfaction scores, registered record community donations and was recognized nationally for clinical excellence.

In addition to his work on the hospital board, Carson has served as president of Great Bridge Title and Disbursement Company, a full-service title insurance agency and public abstracting business, since 1992. He also has served on the Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, the State Board of Education – Proprietary School Division and the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business Tenure Board.

VHHA’s Excellence in Governance Award honors persons from member hospital or health system governing bodies who have a history of making significant contributions to the healthcare field, on state and local levels, through commitment to service and leadership.

The Chesapeake Hospital Authority is an 11-member board of area citizens that oversees the operations of Chesapeake Health and its anchor facility, Chesapeake General Hospital.
