CGH delivers 24 babies in 24 "controlled but chaotic" hours

April 26, 2007 - It all started at 7:32 a.m., Thursday Feb. 22, and for the next 24 hours it was “controlled chaos, in CGH’s BirthPlace, as baby after baby arrived. By 6:37 the next morning 24 babies – 13 boys and 11 girls (one set of twins) – had been delivered, 14 of them by cesarean section. It was the BirthPlace’s record for daily deliveries. All of this during a time when the
Nursery was undergoing renovations and staff was at a minimum because many were home with the flu or tending to loved ones with it. According to those who were there, the teamwork between Labor and Delivery, the Mother/Baby Unit, the Nursery and medical staff was “awesome.” Both operating rooms were going at the same time, and nurses and doctors operated at top performance efficiencies. Said one observer: “It was crazy, but a good kind of crazy.” On average, about eight to 10 babies are born daily at CGH.
