Hospital offers scholarships for future nurses
Oct. 17, 2007 - Chesapeake Regional Medical Center has partnered with the Chesapeake City Schools to offer full scholarships to public high school students who commit to work at the hospital as licensed practical nurses after graduation.
The program began this fall for seven students. They are all enrolled in their second year of the Chesapeake Center for Science and Technology’s Licensed Practical Nursing program. The scholarship covers tuition and books.
Eligible students must have a 3.0 grade point average or above after their first year, and a record of dependability and a strong interest in nursing. Students must also display a financial need. Students are recommended for this scholarship by staff members at the Center for Science and Technology.
After completing their LPN certification, recipients agree to work for the hospital for a year. After that, they become eligible for the organization’s LPN to RN program. This program provides a stipend of up to $8,000 to be used toward nursing school expenses. Participants must then complete schooling within two years and obtain their RN license. After completion, recipients are required to serve two years as full-time RNs at Chesapeake Regional.
